Top Layer Security Rounds Out 2009 with Another Record Year of Growth |
| |
Despite a cautious overall IT spending environment, Top Layer Security grew its intrusion prevention system, ("IPS") business impressively year-over-year. Much of that growth was driven by new customer acquisitions, having added new E-Series customers in 2009. In addition to enterprises deploying IPS for the first time, Top Layer has successfully positioned its IPS product family as a natural replacement for enterprises looking to upgrade their IPS infrastructure to new technology that combines superior protection with high-performance.
Peter Rendall, Top Layer's CEO, commented, "We took a bold step at the beginning of the year to radically change the dynamics of the IPS market by offering customers a better way to acquire a high-performance IPS solution. Offering our IPS appliances at no cost, in exchange for a three-year contract for support, maintenance and threat update service, we provided customers with the industry's lowest total-cost-of-ownership which helped fuel our growth. Price alone is not a sufficient differentiator, our broader protection against known and unknown cyber threats and the better network performance that our solution provides while under attack were winning differentiators during evaluations and competitive bake-offs. I was particularly encouraged with the rate at which we replaced incumbent IPS vendors like 3Com/TippingPoint, IBM/ISS, Juniper, and Cisco. By the end of the year, we had gained over twenty new customers who had upgraded to our IPS solution. "
Rendall also added, "Even though it is difficult to predict the future with any accuracy, our pipeline of opportunities continues to grow and expectations around repeat purchases from new customers is high. With the continued investment in development activities and our strategy to radically change the way customers can acquire a leading IPS solution, I feel confident that our growth will continue to track ahead of the broader market throughout 2010." |

New Format For Top Layer Luncheon Seminars For 2010 |
| |
Over the past year, the Top Layer team has traveled to 36 towns and cities throughout North America delivering its highly acclaimed luncheon seminar series on the future cyber threat landscape to nearly 1,500 senior security executives. This educational series has given us a great opportunity to solicit feedback from those who are tasked with protecting their organizations' data and critical IT assets and we're pleased to announce a new exciting format for 2010.
Starting in January, our industry and technology experts will discuss real-world threats facing organizations in 2010 and beyond. They will show you first hand how our IPS technology has evolved to protect against the newest threats. And, finally, you'll experience a live demonstration of how a computer system can be quickly compromised with easily accessible tools and basic computing skills, even while being protected with network and host-based firewalls. Of course, the demonstration wouldn't be complete without showing you how our IPS can block the attack in real-time and prevent a potentially costly compromise.
For a list of upcoming events, please Click Here to register today.
If you'd like to experience a live demonstration ahead of, or instead of attending one of our luncheon seminars, please join us for one of our Cyber Attack and Defense Webinars, hosted by Mike Paquette, our Chief Strategy Officer and Marcus Gavel, our Director of Security. | |

| |
Zero-day attacks, "proof of concept" exploit code, and test tool modules targeting an unpatched Microsoft SMB v2 vulnerability were reported as being active on the Internet on Tuesday, September 8th. Successful attacks cause an immediate "blue screen" crash of computers with vulnerable operating systems, such as Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. Top Layer IPS 5500 Customers did not have to worry - They were already protected! No IPS signature updates were required; the protection had been in place for years. Top Layer's Security Team issued an informational advisory to reassure its IPS 5500 customers that when configured with recommended security policies, the IPS 5500 was already protecting them against these new zero-day attacks. Distributed Denial of Service Attacks Hit Social Networking Sites |
| |
Recently, Twitter and Facebook were downed due to apparent Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. These sites and other social networking sites are extremely attractive targets for hackers. Social networks have served as the delivery mechanism for hackers to deliver malware, using social engineering and shortened URLs to hide malicious code. This time though, hackers are going after the source as the real-time nature of social networks, and their reach means hackers can wreak havoc with a broad impact quickly. A website then gets flooded with so many requests that it becomes unavailable or unstable for normal use. The fact is a DDoS attack is designed to render a network or server incapable of providing any normal service driving customers and users to go elsewhere. Top Layer is committed to providing the most comprehensive protection against DDoS attacks for all types of web sites. |

Top Layer Customers Protected Against A New Critical Microsoft Zero-Day Vulnerability |
| |
Today, Microsoft took the rare step to announce a critical vulnerability that it did not have a fix for. A vulnerability in Microsoft's Video Control object could allow an attacker to control vulnerable systems by enticing the user to open a web page that contains certain malware. The Video Control object is an ActiveX component that enables Microsoft Windows Media Center to record and play television video. Top Layer's Security Team issued a same-day protection pack to customers to provide immediate protection against remote exploits of this vulnerability.
The last emergency bulletin from Microsoft was in October 2008 when they announced a vulnerability that criminals exploited to infect millions of PCs with the Conficker worm. Top Layer announced then that its customers were already protected against that zero-day vulnerability. |
